Activeplan’s team has been developing what is now known as BIM since the early 1990’s and have used our expertise to develop a platform that manages buildings, spaces, systems and assets in a cloud-based SQL Server environment.

This enables inter-operation with other applications much simpler via webservices, particularly solutions like procurement, maintenance and lifecycle management that have little interest in geometric models.

However, we are Autodesk developers and have created integration with Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks and Forge so the creation of spatial models transforms into the management of spaces and the systems and assets that support them.

Compliance – because we use a relational database, it is simple to create rules to check data against a requirement, automating many processes that are currently manual reducing risks, time and the reliance on skilled people who could be working on things that can’t be so easily automated.

We are working with partners who are also interested in transforming the way the industry currently creates assets, reversing the process so it starts with the Client (or their FMs) defining exactly what information they will need at the end and how it should be structured and then requiring the designers and supply chain to prove, at each RIBA stage, that they are delivering it.

Asset Information – We work with some of the world’s largest FM firms such as Engie, Sodexo and Interserve FM, managing large hospitals where poor asset data can literally cost lives.

We have spent a lot of time understanding what information they need – and what they consider irrelevant. The latter is important because, if they are provided with too much information, someone will have to keep it up to date.

RetroBIM – 99.9% of buildings already exist but their as-built records are very difficult to use and update, so we provide a service to reverse-engineer what they have, create a coordinated BIM compliant model (typically 2D) where spaces, systems that support them, assets and room data sheets are fully coordinated and changes recorded in a version-controlled manner.

Automation – Although we are a software firm, we are very bothered about finding simpler ways of populating all the applications that are used in the process and replace the steps that currently require humans to interpret information.

As the British Standard and BuildingSmart International schema for handover information, the (much maligned) COBie is very much at the heart of what we do, and we have a strong understanding of how to make it work for operations.
